The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
