Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
