Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
